Putting My Money where my mouth is. My View of Iraq from the inside.

Rob Ballew before a mission

advertisement

As many know I am currently serving in Iraq as a soldier in the U.S. Army. I had a choice last year to serve my second tour in Iraq or to get out while I could. And as many might have guessed my mind was made up before I was ever even asked. I chose this path I am on and although there are more days than I would ever admit to that I kick myself for doing this I would never ever change my decision. The reasons for me coming back are many, first and foremost I believed I could do more good to both the U.S. as well as the good people of Iraq by coming over for the second time. Another reason is because I was sick of getting the news from biased media sources on both sides and wanted to see if any of it was true. Another reason is because I have many friends who where set to deploy and what kind of person would I be to not go with them. And last but not least I have always supported our troops, and what better way to support our troops is there than to fight side by side with them. In other words "I put my money where my mouth is".

There have been numerous let downs in this deployment. The mobilization process is hell, by far worse than anything I have experienced in Iraq thus far. The fact we have no interaction with the Iraqis, a fact I have complained about on a few occasions. And the mission although very vital, lacks some of the excitement you might expect. This leads to me not having much to write about and if I do the articles lack the knowledge a lot of newsvine wants to hear.

But as you might guess I do have a lot to say about Iraq and the things I do see. Things have changed a lot in the few months we have been here. Attacks are down a lot and although we still get hit with rockets and mortars on occasion the attacks are down from when we first got here. There has also been a decrease in attacks both IED and small arms on convoys, this can be accredited to both the Coalition Forces as well as the Iraqi Forces who maintain the roads relatively well. And there has also been less attacks on civilians by insurgents which is a very good thing. All in all, although it coming along rather slow it is still coming along and even slow progress is better than no progress.

The other thing I see is the people are out more. There are more small businesses opening up by the day. It almost seems like there is less fear throughout the streets. The infrastructure although not up to standards is also getting better daily. I think this because if the work both Iraqis and Coalition forces have done in taking the streets back from the insurgents. We hear very little of this on the mainstream media, it seems only the bad news makes the headlines. It makes people not want to believe there is any good going on over here. Or when there is good news it just isn't good enough. But the way I see it even a bunch of small steps can turn into a great distance in time. And all these people need here is time and a some help and we have the resources to give them both. I am not a politician and in truth hate this war as much as anyone here. But I also feel our presence here is needed. Every day here is another day away from my life, my family, friends, and a lot of things I took for granted in the past. But also every day here I feel is also worth while for the good I am involved in here.

Last but not least I will do my best to keep you updated on things as I see them progress. I can't promise anything ground breaking or worthy of many other writers here. But what I can promise you is the truth and what I observe on my missions and daily life here in Iraq. And lastly, I want to apologize for my lack of insight on the Iraqi side of the story, and if ever I get the chance I will do my best to get that side out . Thanks to all that have read this I look forward to your input.

What's this?
Who's leading the conversation?
This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

Hope you enjoy the article. Also to those who have not checked my column I seed a lot of articles from stripes.com a newspaper made by and for the troops deployed through out the world. These articles also give you some insight you might not get from mainstream media outlets. And another thing I would like to say this article is as unbiased as I can make it and would prefer limited partisan squabbling if possible. I hope everyone enjoyed reading this as much as I enjoyed writing it.

Hope you enjoy the article

Hah....Rob..You are way to modest ! I think it is wonderful to get some real life story's about what life is really like where you are. You are a fellow Newsviner and part of the family. We don't have that with any of the other reporters that report back from Iraq, they are all faceless to us. But you are very different as most of us know at least a little about you and you know something about many of us and that gives all of us a unique common bond. I am glad that you do spare the time to check in with us and tell us what is going on in your own words, it gives all of use a very special and unique view into what is really going on. I have learned alot from reading your column and its one of the first things I look for everyday.

Good to hear from you, Rob.

Is the thinking that attacks are down because of the surge working or because of Sadr's cease-fire? I know it is a complex issue, and it is great that attacks are down, but I'm just wondering what the lessening of attacks is attributed to.

My guess is.

Of course Sadr's cease-fire makes a big difference.

But as people see more of their own troops on the ground they realise that the handover is nearer. I have a feeling that the terrorist groups are not given the support of the local population and want these non Iraqi terror groups out of their country. But not being there my self makes this just an opinion TheJonesGirl and I can understand Rob's flustration as he can not react with the locals.

Keep your head down Rob, the reporting is not as important as your life. Your report is still very interesting.

Best Wishes

Babel Fish

TheJonesGirl and Babel Fish,
Actually I think it is both and I agree with you Babel Fish. The surge helped get more of our forces on the streets, but also the increase in Iraqi Forces also helped too.

Thank you both for your comments and kind words

Hi rottlady, Thank you for your comment. Like I said sometimes it is hard to write about things when I get no interaction from the other side but we do get an idea of the general feeling as we drive by them. Most seem pretty happy to see us on the roads. But like I said seem.

I'm for completing the mission.

Why do you have to go and say that? Why couldn't you have left it end after you first sentence? I should just go and say, "Thanks for the reporting, Rob. I'm an atheist that's pro-life!" I mean Jesus, does everything have to be political with you people? Just take it for what it is and cool your political jets.

Good to hear you and please don't think we would ever find your articles boring. It is always awesome to hear from someone at the front. As you know I'm also a staunch war hater, but tis nice to hear things are somewhat better and sounds like it's coming from the residents.

Let's just get everyone out of there and see how they can be a soveriegn nation on they're own.

Thanks again Rob and we would sure like to hear from the locals about the gratitude for the sacrifice your making.

I can't promise anything ground breaking or worthy of many other writers here. But what I can promise you is the truth and what I observe on my missions and daily life here in Iraq.

Rob that is priceless. For so many of us who are jaded, cynical from being lied to time and again, the Pinocchio factor goes along with nearly every officially sanctioned report.

The basic tone of "news" feels so much like PR spin coming from everyone from Green Zone to the Pentagon.

Here you are with the words shared with friends, giving us the chance to see through your eyes. You can not see everything, but a glimpse of what is truthfully happening around you. That helps take us to a place, far closer than any of us could feel otherwise.

It does something else too, it helps to remind us that for all our differences in culture and politics, we are able to put aside those things that separate us for shared ideals and basic respect for our fellow human beings. There is a hefty dose of respect due anyone who puts their money where their mouth is.

As a friendly voice at Newsvine and for those who are in your life beyond here, there is a concern for your safety. It puts a bit of heart in the game and maybe emphasizes the idea that we care for those we know. Maybe our friends lists should cast as wide a net as possible and look more at where we can find ways to find solutions rather than conflicts, in every sense of the word.

May friends find their way into your life and keep you safe, until you are back with the ones, who love you most.

Hi, Rob,
We haven't met before --
I just want to say don't sweat not having any razzle dazzle report of a combat mission or news from the front. We just appreciate getting an honest report of what it is really like. Go ahead and write about stuff you're afraid will be too boring - you might surprised how people back home relate to stories about the chow or the boring routines or the weather or whatever.
And come home safe, y'hear?

Iraq's entire communications infrastructure was severely damaged by the war, however is on the way back to a more or less functional system. Nothing of course in comparison to what we have in the Western part of the world.

Cell phone service is the standard Europe wide (well everyplace but America and T-Mobile GSM) and is provided mainly by a company called Orascom Telecom with somewhere around 9,000,000 users.

The land line service from what I understand is still in rough shape and has been the last to be repair and only has around 900,000 users with long waiting lists.

Internet before the overthrow of Saddam was close to impossible with less then 20,000 users, Since the overthrow, many Internet cafe's and home use have open. Uruklink is one of the main service providers and provides dial-up, DSL up to 2.0488 Mbps in certain areas, Wireless, and Satellite via VSAT (Very Small Aperture Terminal) dishs that are about 18-22 inches in diameter.

There was a good article about this a few years back in USA today:

Cell phone service spotty, but reception's been great

Sometimes you can spot a Iraq email address as the official Internet code is iq, however usually I just see the standard .com or.net address.

Hope this was on help. I am sure Rob can give more up to date info and practical info on his end.

Hi Rob

I think your view from the inside is invaluable. One of the things we need most is good communication so that we can understand what is really happening, and so we can understand better how conflict arises.

You may be interested to know that there was a recent report on the BBC that things were calming down in Iraq and businesses were getting back to doing business on the streets. It was a week or two ago, so I can't remember much more than that.

I can only quote Pamela, who said it all:

Maybe our friends lists should cast as wide a net as possible and look more at where we can find ways to find solutions rather than conflicts, in every sense of the word.

May friends find their way into your life and keep you safe, until you are back with the ones, who love you most.

The businesses here in Baghdad are opening up and the threat briefings aren't nearly as long as they where in August when we first arrived. I will say there is always the ever present threat but I can also see good changes too. I hope it continues to get better the Iraqis deserve a chance at normalcy and living without fear.

Just had to do a little name calling, didn't you. It seams to me Rob has done a fine job of sticking to the middle ground. On the other hand, I do have a problem with the concept of "good news" because that is such a relative thing. "Good for the mission" or "Good for the Iraqis" I would think one needs to be very clear on this.

Is your MOS the reason for no interaction? Is there some sort of rule they have now to chase off reproach against the troops about mistreating the citizens of Iraq?

My son was there twice as Marine recon through Operation Iraqi Freedom and then Fallujah.
For whatever reason, he interacted with people from Iraq quite a bit.

After that time, some of my nephews have gone and come back and they report what you have, (not much contact with the population).
I am relieved that you are here, Rob. There has been too much speculation based on media information and not enough input from our flesh and blood fellow Americans for me.

We hear very little of this on the mainstream media, it seems only the bad news makes the headlines. It makes people not want to believe there is any good going on over here.

Got it in one, Rob. The media, in particular, use bad news and fear to sell their papers and so that is the staple fare. Whip the readers up in a frenzy instead of passing on the truth. It is lovely to hear from you because I never knew you were serving in Iraq, I thought you were reporting from there.

Rob,

Thank you for your service to our country and your willingness to put it on the line everyday.

I hope that articles like yours become more mainstream so that Americans can get the truth about what is happening in Iraq.

I know several young men from my church who are serving in Iraq as well including some who are returning by choice as you have. They all report the same kinds of things that you do. Positive change is taking place and ordinary Iraqis are being allowed to start to experience a life of more normalcy than they have ever experienced.

Regardless of your own beliefs, I want you to know that you are being prayed for.

First and foremost, Mr.Ballew, hats off to you and all who serve their country in uniform. You make the sacrifices so that politicians can look good without sacrificing life, limb or family. I respect you for stating the media is bias,at times,on both sides. In today's America, that is a dangerous thing to say. Given all that has happened since March of 2003, those who are not on the ground in Iraq can have a hard time seeing the forest from the trees. May God watch over you and all the troops. Hoping that all of you will have as peaceful a Xmas as possible.

Rob, you are a jewel! Thanks for your report. It leads me to believe my view of Iraq from afar is not so far off. There is one line in your article that makes me believe cooler and more reasoned heads are in charge these days.

The fact we have no interaction with the Iraqis, a fact I have complained about on a few occasions.

I know this is one of the things you decry about your present tour of duty but it just so happens it is the main reason for the success of the surge, in my opinion. Once a Status of Forces Agreement is established (if ever) the real interaction can begin. If our military becomes entwined with the every day economy of Iraq, Americans may well turn out to be heroes to the overwhelming Iraqi community.

Thanks for this Rob, I am not surprised that you are not going out

The fact we have no interaction with the Iraqis,

This would have a lot to do with the reduced number of attacks on US forces. Second, I dont share either your or Old Fogey';s optimism. The damage has been done and you would be naieve to think that the Iraqi's will ever forgive the US for that. I think the main reason for the reduction in violence is very simple. Iran turn up and down the heat at will in Iraq. The US are virtual;ly powerless to stop this.

I also have very good sources inside Iraq, and they dont live in a US military vacuum. I dont mean to offend you here, but the notion even the slightest notion that the US could be making progress in Iraq or Afghanistan is just laughable. The Shia are backed by Iran, the Sunni's utterly despise the US for what they have done, and the Kurds are universally hated by everyone. They are also seen as being in bed with Israel.

Sorry to throw a spanner into the works, but this is just a calm before a storm, a mere lul.

To my original question before you were deployed, Have you noticed any of that Black market Petrol (Gasoline) being sold around the place. Particularly the Pink petrol from Iran? How is the fuel situation there, Can Iraqi's get enough? do they have access to clean water.
