OK I know that people think I am crazy but last night it snowed here in Baghdad. OK it did rain more than it snowed but the temperatures dropped into the low 30's causing the rain to change to a snow like substance. I couldn't believe it untill I saw it with my own eyes. But in truth it did snow and none of it stuck. I guess from what we saw on the internet this is the first time in decades the Iraqis seen snow in Baghdad. I read somewhere people woke up just to see it. It must be quite a sight to wake up to snow when you have never seen it. And to those of us from places it snows it just seems so natural. Sure there was no proof it left to show it ever snowed but at least I was here and seen a sort of historic weather event here in Baghdad. So while we are on the subject I will talk of the weather.
When we first got here it was hot. I honestly have never felt heat like I have felt here in the Middle East. I have heard thing like "oh it is a dry heat it is not that hot". First off that is bull@!$%#, hot is hot no matter whether it is humid or dry. Add the body armor, kevlar, and the ACU's (uniforms) and we are talking extreme heat. Imagine 120degree temps while wearing some very uncomfortable and heavy equipment that adds at least 20 degrees to your core body heat. Say what you want about the Army, but they sure trained the hell out of recognizing all the symptoms and conditions of heat injuries. As well as treatment and how to give IV's. Couple all that with the wind, (something I like to call the Devil's Breath), and you have a pretty uncomfortable combo. The wind is always hot during summer months, I like to describe it as being like someone using blow dryer from a car wash while throwing rocks and sand at you. Not to mention you find sand and dust covering everything. So as you can Imagine the summer months here suck.
After the summer comes about a month of very nice and comfortable temperature which leads into what they call the rainy season. I guess it must have just started because it has rained a few times but for the most part has stayed pretty dry. But last night it rained for almost 6 hours straight and eventually led to the snow that I talked about. So now we are left with the inevitable "quagmire" left over from the rain/snow mixture of last night. We are now trying to clean mud off of everything. I can tell you this mud is not like Indiana mud. This mud here sticks to you and does not let go. It is quite annoying and makes trying to keep things clean here. Climbing in and out of my gun truck I knew that there would be no possible way other than not going to work that I could ever keep it clean. Our boots are covered with about 4 pounds of mud and our floor is filthy. Not only that it makes the roads treacherous and increases our chances of an accident while outside the "wire". All I can say is boy does winter here sucks.
So when does the weather not suck here like I said there are a few months where it is really quite comfortable and not so unpleasant. And for the most part we are lucky enough to be in either tents or trailers with some type of climate control. And in all truth it is a lot better than the first time I was here. So other than the times we have to go outside and do something it isn't so bad. But in truth I do think I like the hot dry weather better than the cold muddy weather.
For some reason, I just cannot picture snow in Iraq.....Thanks for keeping us posted Rob !
Wow, that does indeed sound strange.
I was in the far east back in the day and I remember the temp getting down to 4C one winter night. I thought that was cold then.
Rob,
From your description of the lousy weather in Iraq, the folks who originally got dibs on Iraq must have been about #277 in the real estate line.
Epiph:

Um.
That would be us. Cradle of Civilization and all. Although I can't think of the cite, a Discovery Channel special or something, there's a bit of speculation that Global Warming 10,000 years ago or so left the rivers and amazingly fertile land in place for us to begin the Long March to Civilized Human Conduct! Leading to Britney Spears......
Rob, I saw a photo of a guy holding his son, who had a grin on his face.
I've painted in up to 114-degree heat, but I can't imagine the heat there.
Rob and 'roads,
This is rather irrelevant, but I am on a quest to make 'roads laugh.
Do you remember Mork's reaction to seeing snow for the first time? "Will it bash out my brains, Mindy?"
I did not view that program episode, Epiph, and so I could not have laughed. I cannot say I would have laughed. I did not laugh now. For that I am eternally sorrowful.
Little irrelevant story to share ---when I was in junior high I adopted a little beagle mix and I named her Mindy.....then about a year later Mork & Mindy hit the airwaves....I thought I was way cool to have named my dog Mindy before it became the hottest show on TV....nanu nanu!!
Rob - snow in Iraq!?? Way cool....I'm sorry it didn't get to you in time for Christmas (even if it didn't stick)......
Stay warm, and be safe. I served in the Army for nearly two years, among the very best of my life. Our thoughts remain with you always.
Rob,
My pleasure. I seem to remember snow at other times in Iraq. Obviously, it snows in the mountains. What about on the coast? Any snow there? And how cold does it get there at nights, even in the summer?
Look forward to hearing more about your stay, the people, etc. Do you have a chance to circulate with the civilian population, or is this too dangerous?
I have flown over the desert after a snow storm on the way to the persian gulf 40 years or so ago, it looked very strange. Yes it snow some times in the desert in fact in the in the bible I believe snow was mentioned once or twice?
Rob,
I saw something on the news thing morning about snow in Bagdad, and thought of you. I am glad you got to see it.
Good thing your Colts don't have to worry about the weather, they're playing inside the RCA dome. I hope they do well tomorrow, next week I might have a different wish..
Rob,
am glad you are going for them lol.
I don't have any choice. I have Manning, Addai, and Harrison picked on my fantasy team. Self serving interests only. LOL
have heard thing like "oh it is a dry heat it is not that hot".
Yeah a fire is dry heat also. Wouldn't want to stand inside one.
Hey Rob, Just checking in,Hows it going?I'm sure that the little flurries of snow must of been like seeing a shooting star back here!A little bit of a home reminder in the sky.Brady is on fire and I don't thing he is going to be stopped,Pats are going all the way this year,And I predict a win! That mud really does suck ! I hate mud,In the spring here in upstate N.Y.the mud is heavy and makes it hard to walk,So I know what your saying.Main thing,Keep your feet dry#1,It really hurts to walk with split sore feet,Done it before,Not fun.Take Care friend,Mark
I'm not sure if I would have thought that cool or if that would have freaked me out. :| Then again I'm easily paranoid, so...yeah.
Hey Rob, every time I read one of your great stories, my respect for you -- and all the other brave soldiers in Iraq -- grows by another mountain. Thanks for keeping all of us posted -- as Cliff already said, our thoughts are always with you.
I saw pics of all the ice in Florida, too-mind boggling all the places that are snow and ice that aren't used to it..
