Prosecutors say Whitsey, 19, fired three shots during a fight in the nearby basketball court. He missed the two men he intended to kill and struck down Mitchell, Deputy Prosecutor David Wyser said.

Who's leading the conversation?
This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

I live a few miles fro where the incident took place. The sad fact is it is not the guns it is the douche bags who get them in their hands. I think he should get the max sentence tough sentences on gun crimes could help keep other douche bags from killing innocents. My condolences to the Mitchell family sadly nothing will bring her back.

No matter who was killed, it was murder and should be punished to the fullest extent of the law. The man who pulled the trigger was not going to the basketball court to shake hands and play nice. We need to go after the source of illegal, unregistered weapons. Yes, a person has the right to bear arms and we should protect that right, but I would not allow any person access to a weapon unless they accept the responsibility that goes hand in hand with that right. Be trained, be knowledgeable and be willing to accept the results of your actions.

The right to bear arms was made a long time ago for us to protect ourselves, not to kill eachother over a fight on the b ball court. This person should be in jail, forever .I'm not sure that people like him really understand that a gun will kill and not just wound. What ever happened to a good ol' fist fight. I mean what are the odds of hitting an innocent bystander with your fist. Guns are bad and should only be used in defense, not as an offensive threat to anyone near the idiot who pulls one out because they got thier feelings hurt. My high school sweetheart shot himself at age 19 by accident , He had a gun because he was taught they were cool and if he had one he was a badass. Thats what kids are taught from a young age and as adults we need to educate our youth and teach them that guns will kill dead no coming back and the only one who suffers are the ones left behind. Its not like the one who gets shot dead has the chance to think, wow, i shouldn't have messed with that guy. In this case an innocent girl was killed and the family is left behind wondering why. The only justice for this family would be to put him away forever, and others just like him!
